We ask for your help on the ASIS&T Thesaurus
Maintenance Project. We invite participation for
all aspects of the thesaurus. We need scopes note
added and invite Schools of Library and
Information Science contribute - with attribution
- scope notes for the thesaurus.

A forum all suggestions/discussion as well as
submitting Scope notes, definitions, and new
terms is set up at
<http://www.dataharmony.com/ASISTNotes/>http://www.dataharmony.com/ASISTNotes/

To be true to standards, we will distinguish
between scope notes and definitions. We're
looking for useful definitions -- more than for
notes to indexers on limitations on the use of
the term in indexing. A fine difference, but
probably worth at least mentioning. E.g. SN for
"information science" says it should be used for
indexing only in the most general circumstances.

from Z39.19:
A note following a term explaining its coverage,
specialized usage, or rules for assigning it.

6.2.2 Scope Notes
A scope note is used:
• to restrict or expand the application of a term,
• to distinguish between terms that have
overlapping meanings in natural language, or
• to provide other advice on term usage to either the indexer or the
searcher.
A scope note should state the chosen meaning of a
term. It may also indicate other meanings that
are recognized in natural language, but which
have been deliberately excluded from the controlled
vocabulary.
