Dear SIG/ED Members,

Please consider volunteering to serve as a mentor for the ASIST 2002 SIG/ED
Doctoral Seminar on Research and Career Development! Mentors work with
junior researchers and cultivate new leaders for ASIST and the field of
information and library science. We particularly need volunteers in the
area of technical IR research and also in a management-related area. To
participate, you simply need to be an established researcher in the field
in which the assigned student is working. (You must also not be a current
member of the student's dissertation committee.)

Brief description of the seminar: Doctoral students conducting their
dissertation research will be invited to attend a half-day workshop during
the Annual Meeting. An established researcher will be assigned as a mentor
for each student. At the workshop, the students will have the opportunity
for in-depth discussion of their current research and future career and
research plans with their mentors and the other participants. This program
is analogous to the doctoral consortia offered by other professional
associations such as ACM SIGCHI and the Association for Information Systems.

If you are interested in this excellent service opportunity, or have
questions, please email me (jfagan at lib.siu.edu ) and/or Barbara Wildemuth
(wildem at ils.unc.edu).

thanks,

Jody Fagan
Chair, SIG/ED
