[sigCR] fun fact for the day about SIG CR

Thanks for the updates everyone, and Kathryn + Joe, great that you will put in a proposal for a workshop...
I'm not sure what the climate (or preference) is for the majority of SIG/CR members, but "classification" has so many tentacles. I fully admit I'm biased via metadata, but I'd love to see SIG/CR be hospitable to metadata research as well as/and in-relation to classification, given the range of views. Diane's note about RDA fit in here. I believe this SIG has been this way at times--but maybe not stated so. Every ILS program has people teaching in these areas, and many of us teaching classification inter-connect w/developments in cataloging/metadata/ISKO, Dublin Core.. and the list goes on. But, a conference where there is a whole day devoted to "research" followed by opportunity to link with colleagues in our larger field in other areas represented by other SIGs is found at ASIST. Perhaps a broader stated view of the scope of this SIG will invite more participant and membership. Best wishes, jane

So good to hear from you Jane! I'm currently the Secretary for SIG/CR. Our membership numbers are critically low, and I've been working with a nominating committee to set an election for Chair and Chair-elect (we don't have one right now!) prior to the annual meeting. Joe Tennis and I are crafting a workshop proposal and plan to submit it today.
I'll continue with the fun facts as we prepare for the annual meeting.
Did you know that in 1974, the former chair of SIG/CR decided to change the name of the SIG? Simon Newman drafted a proposal that included the following rationale:
"While the SIG is interested in research in classification, it is also interested in and comprehends the technology of classification, both applied and theoretical.. . . The title 'Classification Research' is to narrow - and the following are offered as possible alternatives:
Classification
Classification Technology
Classification Research and Development
This wasn't the last time changing the name of the SIG was suggested!
Have a great Monday, more later!
Kathryn
