What about applications of cataloging?
In my Journal Descriptor Indexing research, journal descriptors (JDs; about 120 medical disciplines) in NLM catalog records for serials are, in effect, exported to MEDLINE documents in the corresponding serials. I have argued that LC classification numbers can be used in the same way as these JDs (which are local to NLM). For example, the classification number (and corresponding descriptive phrase) for the Journal of Applied Meteorology can be exported to all the articles in that journal in a bibliographic database. The association between words in meteorology journals and this classification number can serve as a powerful tool for information retrieval and possibly disambiguation. For example, the word "star" in a text might be accurately disambiguated as the meteorological sense if the text contains a lot of words associated with the meteorology classification number. The text need not be a journal article; it could be a Web document.

Ditto to Barb and Shawne and all from Simmons - we now have three
faculty in org (just added Kathy Wisser) and planning on expanding
curriculum.
