As the current Chair, I feel a need to respond to some of the recent emails
about the nature of the current elections. A call went out and few people
responded to give noiminations or to offer to be SIG-CR officers. A ballot
was posted in a timely manner, I believe, and there was ample opportunity
for SIG members to ask questions of the candidates. None were received until
a few days before the closing date, and yes, we do have a delay in some
of our email messages being posted to the elist. Sometimes there is a disconnect
between the email address under which a person has signed up, and the one
from which they send a message.
I do object to the characterization of the election as a "popularity contest"
-- I don't think anything was done to make it so, and we had two excellent
candidates and a close election. A number of people, on their ballot, commented
to me that it was hard to choose between two well-qualified candidates.
Who could object to that!?
There certainly is room to improve the SIG-CR activities -- but I don't
think bashing the current election is quite the right moment or spot to
do it. Those who care about the election voted, and we look forward to all
who can to be at the planning meeting on Monday, November 15 -- where all
ideas will be welcome.
