Greetings all!
I enjoyed meeting many of you at the 13th ASIST SIG/CR Workshop on
Classification Research. I'd like to thank our leadership, and all of you
who worked so hard to make the workshop a success. The workshop gave me
plentiful food for thought.
During the workshop, I made a list of often repeated words. I would like
to share these with you along with an invitation to kick off a
conversation about words which SIG-CR may find useful to define. Perhaps
these words can be the seeds from which a glossary project could begin or
at a minimum, extend the conversation that began last Sunday.
This list makes no assumptions that use of the same term by different
individuals implies consensus either of meaning or motivation. It is also
far from complete, so please add other words that I may have missed. I
hope that the process of negotiating various meanings and motivations will
make this a useful exchange.
Words (roughly) in order of occurrence:
classification
context
definition
research
community
managability
maintainability
(inter)operability
permiability
transparency
testing
comparison
analogy
facet
ontology
hierarchy
outreach
directions
initiatives
protest
activism
Please share your definitions, what the use of these words mean to you, or
any other words that should be here for discussion, or of words
that are here, but should not be.
Looking forward to talking with you,
Kathryn La Barre
