Gendered Social Computing, Social Media, and Virtual Spaces

A Parallel Session at the 20thAnnual Human-Computer Interaction International Conference
Las Vegas, NV
July 15-20 2018
Scope of Parallel Session

The ways in which men and women engage with others vary by social media site, and each gender engages with social media platforms differently. Studies have found that information systems research is gendered by using a critical feminist lens to review the literature. Other studies found that the language used and the ways in which men and women engage with technology are different. This parallel session on gendered social computing, social media, and virtual spaces seeks to continue the conversation.

Types of submissions accepted are short papers, working papers, and full papers. All submissions must be original and may not be under review by another publication. INTERESTED AUTHORS SHOULD CONSULT THE CONFERENCE’S GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS at http://2018.hci.international/submissions#presentations.

This special session will explore the gendering of social media, social computing, and virtual spaces by addressing topics like:

Gendered language use
Gender-based inequities
Gender identity and cyber security
Online dating- roles, challenges, and personal information management
Gendering of software, tools, of platforms
Gender relation in virtual worlds
Gender relations in social networking environments
Gender relations in gaming communities
Gender relations in social networking environments that are supported by information and communication technologies
Gender relations in virtual communities
Gender roles and stereotypes of social media sites
Social construct presentation and maintenance
Gender and orientation violence and discrimination
Gendered affordances
Discourse dynamics
Digital Gender Divide
Other related topics.
The HCI International 2018 Conference Proceedings will be published by Springer in a multi-volume set. Papers will appear in volumes of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) and Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series. All volumes will be available online through the SpringerLink Digital Library, accessible by subscribing libraries. For further information, or if you are interested in submitting a paper, contact Session Chair Alicia Takaoka (ajwilson at hawaii.edu). Abstracts should be 800 words and should be received by November 30th, 2017 with notification of acceptance occurring by December 15th, 2017. Manuscripts must be received by February 9th, 2018 for consideration. Please visit the HCII conference website for more details and to submit your proposal (http://2018.hci.international/index.php).
