Dear SIG Leaders,

The ASIS&T Board has received much feedback from members regarding the inactive status of some SIGs. The Board perceives that it is a problem to advertise as active SIGs that do not have officers or programming at the annual meeting, in particular, making it difficult for new and returning members to find communities of interest. According to the Society's bylaws, and the Board's and SIG Cabinet's policies, SIGs that are inactive should be converted to virtual status or eliminated altogether. The Board has the final decision regarding the status of any given SIG. With this in mind, the Board has unanimously voted to approve the following motion:

"Move to transfer the Special Interest Groups Information Architecture (IA), Human-Computer Interactions (HCI), and Library Technologies (LT) from Active to Virtual SIG status.

"Background: Virtual SIGs retain their listservs, web and other online presences, may propose and present programming and other member content, and apply to the SIG Project and Reserve Fund to support the above. Virtual SIGs do not have a vote in the SIG Cabinet or a budgetary allocation, and they do not necessarily have officers or submit an annual report."

I think we should take this as an opportunity to open the discussion of status with other SIGs, not to necessarily encourage them to change their status, but rather to increase their member related activities, postings, information dissemination, etc. Since clearly this will be discussed at the Annual, it would be good to have some feedback from each SIG before that. If you are the officer for a SIG that has not submitted your annual report for 2009/10, please do so ASAP by sending it to me or submitting it at http://www.softconf.com/asist2/SIG_of_the_Year/cgi-bin/scmd.cgi?scmd=basicSubmit. SIGs needing to submit a report are AH, HLTH, IFP, MGT, STI, and SI.

Thank you!

KT Vaughan

SIG Cabinet Director 2009-2011

PS: If you missed it, there is also movement to transfer SIG Metrics from virtual to active status. Please contact Cassidy Sugimoto (cassidysugimoto at gmail.com<mailto:cassidysugimoto at gmail.com>) if you have questions or would like to electronically "sign" the petition.
