Wendy Thomas, Data Access Director with the Minnesota Population Center
http://www.pop.umn.edu <http://www.pop.umn.edu> , will present on:
metadata, how metadata standards enable improved data resources
accessibility, and MPC's experience with the Data Documentation
Initiative http://www.ddialliance.org/ddi3/
<http://www.ddialliance.org/ddi3/>
"Most of the non-proprietary metadata standards in use today focus on
specific types or uses of information, creating and interlocking web of
standards that support rather than compete with each other. The DDI
focuses on describing the broad range of social science data from study
inception to the analysis and repurposing of data over time. With the
publication of DDI 3.0 in April 2008, major statistical and research
organizations around the world are moving toward this standard. This
presentation will look at the benefits of using standards to document
your data collection and how the DDI and other standards work together
to support data access, sharing, and preservation."
This should be food for thought for the many of us in "research silos"
who are looking for solutions that allow broader research dissemination
and public use.
