The Minnesota Chapter will host the December 7th SLA Virtual Seminar,
"Copyright for the Corporate Librarian."

Copyright for the Corporate Librarian: The Importance & Consequences of
Copyright Issues in the Digital Environment
http://www.sla.org/content/learn/learnmore/distance/2005virtsem/120705vls/index.cfm

Description
With a growing number of corporate intranets and other electronic
communications tools, companies risk inadvertently violating United States
and international copyright laws. Copyright is a strict liability statute
where neither ignorance nor inadvertence reduces liability.

How can libraries explain to management, public relations and others the
consequences of posting copyrighted materials in the intranet? How can
corporate librarians avoid potentially costly mistakes? Is there any way to
simplify the complicated requirements for compliance with the copyright
law? Should corporate libraries assume the role of copyright police within
the company? Are there steps a company can take to eliminate or reduce its
liability for copyright infringement? These and other issues will be
addressed in this virtual seminar. The New York Chapter of SLA originally
conceptualized this topic and brought forth three presentations and a panel
discussion in March, 2005. The room was filled to capacity--you will not
want to miss it!
