Job Description
There is a great deal of knowledge and intellectual capital created and
used in the research and development process. Much of this is held in
documentary form -- in paper and electronic files -- in many different
locations. Some of it is tacit knowledge that is embedded in people's
brains and experience. Management of this knowledge record needs to be well
disciplined and well coordinated. There need to be consistently applied
processes within the R&D organization.
The Manager, U.S. Scientific Knowledge Services will provide strategic
direction and leadership in developing and implementing policies, systems
and tools to more effectively capture, control and share the knowledge
created in support of Cargill's R&D, product development and intellectual
property efforts.
This person will also manage development and delivery of scientific and
technical information services in the U.S. and collaborate with the
Vilvoorde, Belgium, Technical Information Center (TIC) manager to
coordinate strategies, services and processes, leverage resources and
facilitate knowledge sharing across Technology Development Centers (TDCs)
and geographic locations.
Principle Accountabilities:
60% - Knowledge Management
·Provide leadership in initiation, development and implementation of
strategies, policies and processes for Cargill's R&D organization to manage
the knowledge it creates
·Work with appropriate TDC staff to analyze organizational and client
knowledge and information needs
·Evaluate, recommend and deploy appropriate resources, systems, processes
and services to facilitate effective and cost-efficient knowledge sharing,
information management and collaboration among TDCs and relevant business units
·Collaborate with Vilvoorde TIC manager to coordinate services and
processes, leverage resources and facilitate knowledge sharing across TDCs
and geographic locations
·Communicate with TDC management and other stakeholders about knowledge
management strategies, systems, processes and services
30% - Information Services and Resources
·Provide advice and counsel on identification, acquisition, organization
and distribution of information for best knowledge solutions
·Ensure timely delivery of scientific and technical information services to
TDC and BU clients, including research services, access to print and
electronic information, user training and document management
·Provide secondary research and analysis, including scientific literature
searches, patent research, current awareness alerting and state-of-the-art
reviews.
·Analyze, summarize and interpret research results
10% - People Management/Administration
·Coach, develop and review performance of Technical Information Specialist(s)
·Work with department manager and other team leaders in development and
execution of department strategies, policies and procedures; budgeting and
planning; evaluation and acquisition of information resources and systems
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
B.S. or advanced degree in a relevant technical field (e.g. chemistry,
biology, food science, engineering)
8+ years professional experience in providing strategic technical knowledge
and information management
Experience in managing proprietary technical documentation (research
reports, lab notebooks, etc.); thorough knowledge of research documentation
and patenting processes
Experience in electronic document/database management
Thorough knowledge of scientific, technical and patent information resources
Scientific and technical research skills
Ability to evaluate, analyze and summarize information
Subject knowledge of chemistry, biology, biotechnology, food science or
related fields
Project experience, prioritizing and managing small- to medium-sized
projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
Team building/influencing skills; excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent oral and written communications skills
WANT-HIGH
Food industry experience and knowledge of food industry information resources
Training experience
Leadership/people management experience
WANT-MEDIUM:
Masters Degree in library or information science
