Microsoft Best Practices for Securing the Perimeter & Interior of Corporate
Networks
Will McKnight, Senior IT Account Manager, Microsoft Operations &
Technology Group and Austin Wilson, Security Service Line Architect,
Microsoft Consulting Services
1:00 pm -- 4:00 pm
Description: Remote access to corporate networks and providing secure
wireless connectivity are significant concerns of many IT
professionals. Any machine that can access your corporate network via VPN
effectively extends your network perimeter and is a potential entry point
for worms and viruses. You will hear about Microsoft best practices for
dealing with client laptops and home machines which are used for VPN
connections. A Representative from Microsoft's internal IT organization
will share how Microsoft approaches the security of its own corporate
network for its tens of thousands of users accessing its corporate network
remotely (via Dial & VPN) and wirelessly (via 802.11). This discussion will
include a detailed discussion of the technologies used to ensure that
remote users have the latest security patches and virus signatures.
Microsoft will also go over the architecture of its secure
802.1x wireless network and its use of certificate services. Defense in
depth strategies to keep infected machines from propagating worms and
viruses when connected inside the firewall will be discussed as well.
