FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Documenting the Minnesota Book World
Ever wonder who the book collectors are out there? Or what the name of the
private press in Stillwater is called? Or which library to go to, to find
books on history of electricity?
Dr. Julian Plante has done the book community an enormous service in
documenting the history of bookselling, collecting and publishing in
Minnesota from the Territorial period to the present. On May 30th, you will
have the opportunity to hear him cite some better- and lesser-known figures
that have contributed to the book culture in Minnesota; and he will invite
reaction, comment and suggestions to this immense undertaking.
For nearly twenty-seven years, Dr. Plante served as founding director of the
Hill Monastic Manuscript Library a microfilm archive of medieval and
Renaissance historical manuscript sources and as Research Professor of
Classics at Saint Johns Abbey and University, Collegeville, Minnesota. He
is the author of more than fifty books, articles and book reviews dealing
with a variety of subjects, such as religion, manuscripts, history of
libraries, and art and music. In 1973, Julian was awarded the Lalibela
Cross by His Holiness, the late Abuna Theophilos, Patriarch of the Ethiopian
Orthodox Church. In 1987, he received the WCCO Good Neighbor to the
Northwest Award. He has served on several arts and academic boards,
including Councillor of the Medieval Academy of America, the national
organization for professional medievalists. Retirement has not slowed him,
as he volunteers his time between the Minnesota History Center and the
Ramsey County Library system.
The lecture will take place on Thursday, May 30th, at 3:30 P.M., at The
Bakken Library and Museum. The Bakken is located on the southwest corner
of Lake Calhoun, at the intersection of W. 36th St. and W. Calhoun Parkway
(3537 Zenith Ave.S.).
Parking is available on West 36th Street and also on Zenith Avenue south of
36th Street. A reception will follow.
The event is co-sponsored by The Bakken Library, a collection of books and
instruments documenting the historical role of electricity and magnetism in
the life sciences and medicines, and The Minneapolis Athenaeum, a library
which has brought books and readers together since 1859.
The lecture is free and open to the public
