Folks
I received notice of the folowing upcoming ballots last night - they have a
short turn around period so I need comments by 9/10 and/or a suggestion for
how to vote - relevant documents attached to this note - Im going to have to
attach 12083 to a separate note since its too large to send along with 8777
Note: these are in addition to the upcoming ones this week which I have
already sent out
Personal Opinion - 12083 is the SGML standard on which HTML is based so
revising it may have consequences for HTML - 8777 is the ISO version of the
NISO Command Comand Language standard which NISO has already withdrawn

1) Systematic Review of ISO 12083:1994 (vers 4) Information and
documentation -- Electronic manuscript preparation and markup
This International Standard presents four document type definitions and
additional facilities conforming to IS0 8879. This International Standard is
intended to provide document architectures for the creation and interchange
of books, articles and serial publications.
It specifies:
a) the SGML declaration defining the syntax used by the document type
definitions and document instances;
b) the document type definitions for the following document classes:
i) Books;
ii) Articles;
iii) Serials, which are collections of articles;
c) a document type definition for Mathematics which may be embedded in other
SGML applications.
This International Standard provides a toolkit for developers of these types
of publications to use as a basis for developing custom applications. The
applications developed may be for authors, publishers, libraries, their
users, and/or their database vendors. The document type definitions included
in this International Standard have been designed to be flexible enough to
expand or limit markup epending on the use of the application. For example,
if the application is intended for authors, the copyright information could
be removed. The markup is sufficiently general to enable its use for
similarly structured documents, e.g. the Book DTD can also be used for
technical reports.

2) Systematic Review of ISO 8777:1993 (vers 4) Information and
documentation -- Commands for interactive text searching
ISO TC46/SC4
This International Standard specifies a basic set of commands for the
interactive search of retrieval systems data and the types of response
expected from the processing System. It is intended for use by designers and
users of information retrieval Systems, including computer-based library
catalogues and computer-based database access and search facilities. This
International Standard does not restrict or prohibit the use of other types
of user-system interaction,
such as menus or natural language interfaces, or the use of a "native"
(non-Standard) command language.
NOTE 1: If the meaning of a Standard command name conflicts with the meaning
of a command name in the "native" language, the function of the Standard
command name is preferred.
Some Systems incorporate fewer functions than specified in this
International Standard; others use additional functions. These additional
functions may include added command names, Operators or qualification and
limitation techniques. It is important that
additional functions and the type of response they generate conform to the
general features and Syntax set out in this International Standard.
