[Asis-l] Four New Fall Workshops for Librarians and Information Professionals

The School of Library and Information Science at Kent State University offers dozens of one-credit workshops each semester -- for professionals to enhance their skills and for students to enhance their education.

Four new workshops are being offered this fall:

Video Games in the Library 
October 14 and October 15

Resources Description and Access (RDA) 
This workshop will provide an introduction to Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new descriptive standard that will soon replace AACR2. It will offer a review of the changes between AACR2 and RDA, copy cataloging with RDA, how to create of RDA MARC records, and current cataloging policies using RDA.

Juggling Act:  Managing a Special Library 
This workshop will give students practical library experience within a special library, including select management duties.  The setting will be the Eleanor Squire Library of Cleveland Botanical Garden, a small special library specializing in gardening resources.  Workshop participants will perform general librarian duties, will work with staff within the organization, and will perform select managerial duties at the Eleanor Squire Library.  This unique workshop will give students experience in maintaining a special library and seeing if pursuing a career in library management is of interest.

Tips and Tricks for Searching Online Databases  
This workshop provides tips and tricks for different kinds of searches to enhance searching effectiveness.  By the end of the workshop, students will acquire greater understanding of database structures and indexing, enhanced searching skills, and will become acquainted with the various types of tools available to aid online searching.  In addition, they will consider the various merits of natural and controlled vocabulary searching and develop critical skills in evaluating databases and search output.

Each workshop is worth 1 graduate credit, and the cost of tuition is $452 per credit.
