JOB SUMMARY:

The VIVO: Enabling National Networking of Scientists project is a UF
partnership with Cornell University Library and five other academic research
institutions. Funded by the National Institutes of Health for a two year
period, the team will create an integrated national information network on
biomedical research that will serve not just researchers, but also students,
administrative and service officials, prospective faculty and students,
donors, funding agencies, and the public. (See www.vivoweb.org for more
details) The Metadata/Ontology IT Expert performs duties related to the
development and maintenance of an ontology scheme for the VIVO database
application, manages the UF local ontology schema, and provides leadership
to the national network by managing ontology changes request process, and
serving as a “tier-1” support to sites on ontology questions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works closely with VIVO Development teams at Cornell University and Indiana
University in managing the implementation of the ontology changes, and
providing support to the sites. Develops and maintains a commonly agreed
upon metadata vocabulary that not only reflects the needs of the local
ontology users but is also interoperable and geographically,
administratively, and functionally scalable with the national interface.
Provides national leadership in the management of ontology changes and in
“tier-1” ontology support through guiding regular meetings of ontology site
representatives to discuss ontology issues, serving as project leader for
the Ontology Project area in JIRA, proposing direction changes on the method
of implementing ontology changes, and proposing any new ideas needed to
support the success of the VIVO ontology. Works regularly with the Cornell
Semantic Application Team on specific design issues surrounding ontology
changes, and also works on a one-to-one basis with ontology site
representatives to meet specific needs.


   - Works under the direction of the UF Implementation Lead and with the UF
   Implementation and Outreach teams to manage the local ontology schema and
   facilitate the development and population of VIVO application. Evaluation of
   the local usability of metadata and refining the metadata in a manner that
   facilitates access is a key responsibility of the position.
   - Works closely with National Implementation Team to assist in
   implementation issues related to the ontology. Assists the Outreach
   Education Team to develop national ontology guides.
   - Becomes familiar with the metadata vocabulary currently utilized by
   VIVO and evaluates it for local usability and needs. Consults with Health
   Science Librarians to ensure that vocabulary meets the needs of the targeted
   users and that it complies with MeSH standards.
   - Acts as a local resource expert for metadata and ontologies.
   Communicates and provides instruction to UF development team and creates
   supporting documentation when necessary.
   - Keeps abreast of current and emerging metadata, ontology and other
   technical standards and practices by participating in professional
   development, performing article and professional research as needed,
   monitoring professional discussion lists and participating in appropriate
   professional meetings. Disseminates information as appropriate.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

High school diploma and four years of any combination of relevant
experience, education and/or certification. The level of expertise and skill
required to qualify for a position in this classification is generally
attained through combinations of education and experience in the field.
While such employees commonly have a bachelor's or higher degree, no
particular academic degree is required.

Preferred:

   - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Library Science, Computer Science or
   Information Technology;
   - Demonstrated experience in managing project teams;
   - Demonstrated experience with mark-up languages (i.e., HTML, XML);
   - Demonstrated experience/knowledge of metadata standards and ontologies;
   - Demonstrated knowledge of database models;
   - Experience with Microsoft Windows systems;
   - Familiarity with MeSH vocabulary;
   - Excellent communication skills and demonstrated experience in the
   preparation of documentation;
   - Demonstrated ability to function as part of a team;
   - Ability to work effectively with diverse backgrounds and be comfortable
   with rapid change and working under pressure;
   - Experience working with the science, technology, and medical community.
