[Asis-l] Five New Faculty Members Join the UT-Austin iSchool

The University of Texas iSchool welcomes five new faculty members to
the school
for AY2009-2010 as part of our strategic growth plan. This cohort
increases the
school to 22 faculty members as we mark Fall 2009 with a move to our
new 40,000
sf home at 1616 Guadalupe in Austin.
Diane Bailey studies advanced information and communication
technologies in
modern workplaces. Her research examines the interplay between work and
technology in highly technical settings and occupations Diane holds a
PhD in
industrial engineering and operations research from the University of
California
at Berkeley. Author of numerous articles and award winning papers on
knowledge
use in organizations, Diane’s has received regular funding from NSF,
General Motors and Phillips among others. She joined the iSchool from
the
Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford and will
teach
classes in the area of technology & work as well as managing information
organizations.
Unmil Karadkar studies human-computer interactions, digital libraries,
and
digital humanities. Unmil is completing his PhD in computer science at
Texas A&M
where he conducted research in the Center for the Study of Digital
Libraries. He
has published extensively in many conferences such as ACM/IEEE JCDL
and ASIST,
and in the International Journal of Digital Libraries. He will teach
classes in
Database Management, Digital Libraries, and human computer interaction.
Matthew Lease studies information retrieval, natural language
processing, and computational linguistics. Matt completed his PhD in
computer science at Brown University in 2009 with a dissertation titled:
Beyond Keywords: Finding Information More Accurately and Easily Using
Natural Language. Author more than a dozen conference papers and book
chapters on IR and NLP, Matt also holds an appointment with Computer
Science. He will teach classes on information retrieval and mathematical
concepts in information science.
Ciaran Trace studies archives and records management, material culture
and
information in everyday life. Ciaran holds a PhD in library and
information
science from UCLA and will join the iSchool faculty in January 2010
from the
University of Wisconsin. Her work has appeared in leading journals
such as
JASIST, Journal of Documentation, and Archival Science. She will teach
classes
on archival enterprise and records management.
Yan Zhang studies people's psychological processes when interacting with
information retrieval systems. She is completing her dissertation
People’s
Construction of Mental Models of an Information-rich Web Space at
University of
North Carolina School of Information and Library Science. She also has
a M.S. in
Information Sciences from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a
B.S. in
Information Management and Systems from Nanjing University, China. Yan
has
received awards from IBM and published her work in journals such as
JASIST,
Information Processing & Management, and D-Lib. She will teach classes
in
information architecture and understanding and serving users.
The School of Information is collaborative interdisciplinary grouping of
faculty committed to advancing knowledge of the role of information in
society and educating leaders in the information professions. The
school is
home to the nation’s #1 program in Archives & Preservation, and offers
graduate education at the Masters and Doctoral levels, including a new
joint degree program in Law and Information.
