 ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (TENTATIVE APPROVAL)


The Kent State University School of Library and Information Science is seeking an applicant for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor.  The School supports one of the largest professional library and information science programs in North America and offers the only American Library Association-accredited master=s degree program in Ohio. The master=s degree is offered at the School=s two campuses in Kent and Columbus, and through an electronic distance education network throughout the state. The position is available on the Kent campus and will start fall 2010.

Kent State is a comprehensive graduate and undergraduate University. It is located in Kent, Ohio, within 45 minutes of Cleveland, Akron and Youngstown. The University is the third largest in Ohio, with an enrollment of more than 35,000 students on its eight campuses.

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) is part of a dynamic new college--the College of Communication and Information (CCI). This college offers strong collaborative and research opportunities with faculties in the Schools of Communication Studies (CS), Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC), and Visual Communication Design (VCD).  It is anticipated that SLIS will offer a doctoral degree through CCI beginning fall 2011. The School also administers a unique master’s program in Information Architecture and Knowledge Management (IAKM).

Teaching competences are sought in one or more of the following areas (order is alphabetical):


$          Archives, preservation, and museum studies

$                Information technology, information storage and retrieval, digital libraries, and networking

$          Knowledge organization

$          Reference, information sources and services

$          Social media and informatics


Ability to teach at least one of the School’s core courses is preferred.

Qualifications include a Masters degree in Library and Information Science or a related field and a completed doctorate or substantial progress toward completion of a doctorate in Library and Information Science or a related field.  Evidence or strong potential of publication and successful grant applications in this research area is highly desirable.  Experience and/or interest in synchronous or asynchronous distance learning is preferred.  Nine-month appointment; summer teaching and workshops may be available.  Salary is competitive; benefits are excellent.  Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
