Digital Initiatives Librarian, Media and Data Repository Development

The primary purpose of this position is to lead the development of new
repositories for multimedia/learning objects and for datasets. Reporting to
the Head, Digital Initiatives Department, digital initiatives librarians at
Georgia Tech coordinate projects regarding the management (production,
capture, access, migration and preservation) of the digital intellectual
output of Georgia Tech and the digital conversion of library and archival
collections. The Digital Initiatives Librarian will investigate, coordinate,
and serve as the "point person" on a team charged with designing new
repositories, starting with a digital media and learning object repository.
The Librarian will also participate in technical projects regarding existing
repositories (e.g. SMARTech) and future repository development projects (e.g.
dataset repository). This position will act as the library's expert on the
technical management of multimedia-based digital objects such as: learning
objects and related digital instructional materials; digitally captured
courses, recorded lectures and symposia; digital audio/video files, and
other types of multi-file, complex digital objects. Other activities the
librarian may assist with are e-publishing initiatives, digital
collections-building work, and collecting the digital intellectual works of
the faculty and students.

The work will focus immediately on:
Designing and implementing a digital media and learning object repository,
devising its operating procedures and workflows, managing relevant standards
usage and compliance, and designing and creating associated standards-based
metadata. Other activities this position will be involved in are: managing
databases; participating in and overseeing the conversion of analog audio
and video materials into digital form; migrating digital media resources
into newer formats; working closely with other Digital Initiatives,
Archives, and Systems staff and other university faculty and staff in a
collaborative work environment to carry out digital media repository
projects (i.e. with the Digital Media Laboratory of the Electrical and
Computer Engineering Dept.). Maintain awareness and develop in-depth
knowledge of new media / learning object practices, assesses and integrates
them into library practices for digital object management. Provides
information training and support to improve the overall knowledge of
web-based technologies known by the library faculty and staff, keep aware of
new standards, technologies, and applications and adopt them for library use
as appropriate.
