The Texas State Library and Archives Commission will be hosting an informal workshop on SRU (Search and Retrieve by URL) on Thursday, November 9, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Perry-Castaneda Library of the University of Texas in the 4th floor electronic classroom. Guest presenters Bill Moen from UNT's Texas Center for Digital Knowledge, Ralph LeVan from OCLC Research, and Peter Krenesky from the Open Source Laboratory at Oregon State University will help participants understand the power and potential of SRU.
SRU is a successor to Z39.50, the information retrieval protocol widely used in library applications. SRU has a simpler syntax and is designed to be easier to implement, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in and outside of libraries. It is one of the protocols being supported in the Texas Heritage Digitization Initiative's prototype search interface, accessible at http://www.thdi.org/, and is also being used in the DLF Aquifer project and the OCKHAM project coordinated by OSU and Notre Dame.
This workshop is intended for participants with a working knowledge of Z39.50 and/or other information retrieval standards and protocols and is limited to 20 participants. There is no charge for attendance. Up to three hours of Continuing Education will be offered to participants filling out a CE Request form.
