FACULTY VACANCY
Position: Cataloging Coordinator
Appointment Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor
Salary: $48,000.00 minimum
Available: October 1, 2006
Are you an energetic and motivated leader ready to move forward in the
ever-changing world of cataloging? Are you user and access focused,
willing to try different models until you find the one that works? If so,
the University of Tennessee (UT) Libraries wants you for our Cataloging
Coordinator.
The Cataloging Coordinator reports to the Team Leader for Technical
Services and Digital Access (TSDA) and supervises one librarian and one
exempt staff. This staff member supervises six additional
paraprofessionals. Most monographs are received pre-cataloged and sent
directly to the shelves. Cataloging is performed by faculty and staff
throughout the Technical Services team for branch and affiliate libraries.
Some branches do limited cataloging under the direction of the Cataloging
Coordinator. The TSDA team of nearly thirty faculty and staff, includes
six librarians and two exempt staff who manage acquisitions, cataloging,
serials, and digital resource access for the Libraries. We are
incorporating more non-MARC cataloging into daily operations, and one
librarian works exclusively with metadata.
Catalog Coordinator responsibilities involve multiple roles. S/He will
BE A LEADER:
o Monitor developments in cataloging and digital resource management and
help team members implement them.
o Provide leadership in the application of technology to cataloging.
o Work with Metadata Librarian to incorporate metadata creation into the
departmental workflow; serve as Metadata Librarian backup.
o Encourage cataloging ideas and initiatives from faculty and staff;
direct the implementation of these initiatives.
o Supervise one librarian and one exempt staff member.
BE A COORDINATOR:
o Coordinate cataloging training for librarians and staff.
o Chair cataloging meetings; lead cataloging policy discussions.
o Coordinate documentation of written policies and procedures.
o Coordinate with other library departments (Public Documents, Special
Collections, branch libraries) and affiliated libraries in Knoxville and
Nashville on common issues of cataloging/technical services and use of the
Aleph system.
o Maintain cataloging tools (such as Catalogers Desktop, ClassWeb, etc.)
in print and electronic formats.
o Identify and lead projects that address issues such as database
maintenance and authority clean up.
BE A RESOURCE:
o Work with Technical Services Librarian on outsourced cataloging profiles.
o Work with Library Technology Services to coordinate bibliographic and
authority data loads from vendors.
o Serve as primary resource person for cataloging, especially non-print
formats and complex cataloging, including serials and maps.
o As a member of the Technical Services and Digital Access management
team, contribute to team planning and assessment.
BE A FACULTY MEMBER:
o Conduct research and provide service to meet university expectations for
faculty.
o May serve as a Subject Librarian in a designated area.
Required Qualifications: Masters degree from an ALA accredited program;
at least three years cataloging experience (2 years post-MLS), including
original cataloging in more than one format and cataloging of foreign
language material. Working knowledge of cataloging tools, standards
(present and emerging), and OCLC. Demonstrated interest in the
application of technology to the principles and practices of bibliographic
control. Demonstrated ability to teach, work and lead others in a
production-orientated environment. Demonstrated ability to adjust to
changing priorities. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Additional cataloging experience. Familiarity
with multiple foreign languages. Experience with cataloging specialized
formats (e.g. audio/visual, cartographic, and/or electronic materials);
knowledge of non-MARC metadata schema. Supervisory experience is strongly
preferred.

Located along the Tennessee River and near the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, the metropolitan area offers a beautiful natural
environment in a mild climate with 4 distinct seasons. The cost of living
is among the nations most affordable. Knoxville, and nearby Oak Ridge,
support an opera company, symphony, jazz, and an art museum, and serve as
the medical center for east Tennessee.
The University of Tennessee is the states flagship institution of higher
education, offering comprehensive programs of undergraduate, graduate, and

Enrollment in the statewide system is approximately 42,000. Our students
come from every county in Tennessee, every state in the nation, and many

Doctoral/Research-Extensive classification. It is the oldest and largest
public institution of higher education in Tennessee, founded in Knoxville
in 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state.
The University of Tennessee Libraries, with an annual budget of more than
$13 million, includes the John C. Hodges Main Library; the James D.
Hoskins Library, which includes the Map and Special Collection Libraries;
the Webster Pendergrass Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library; and
the George F. DeVine Music Library. The Social Work Library is located in
Nashville. Over three hundred persons are employed, including 58
librarians, 10 exempt, 123 non-exempt, and 150 students. UT Libraries is
a member of the Association of Research Libraries, SOLINET, and the Center
for Research Libraries. The UT Libraries offers a Web-based information
system and access to a variety of electronic information sources.

Salary and Benefits:
Appointment at rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, dependent upon
qualifications. Minimum salary is $48,000.00. Faculty rank and status;
twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Library faculty must meet
University requirements for promotion and tenure, which includes research
and service components. Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days;
choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable
contributions paid for the employee by the University; optional group
health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is available for all
university employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available
to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
