Simmons GSLIS PhD in Managerial Leadership Accepting Applications for
Inaugural Year
BOSTON (January 25, 2006) - The Simmons College Graduate School of
Library and Information Science (GSLIS) in Boston is pleased to
announce that it is now accepting applications for the inaugural year
of the innovative Ph.D. in Managerial Leadership in the Information
Professions degree. Applications and program materials can be found
at the program website: http://www.simmons.edu/gslis/phdmlip.
Simmons GSLIS has launched the Ph.D. program with a $1.4 million
investment, supported in large part by a three-year grant of
over $780,000 from the national Institute for Museum and Library
Services. Five candidates will be selected for the first year and
will receive full tuition support. Information professionals who
already have attained a senior level in their careers and are poised
to make lasting contributions to the field constitute the candidate
pool most likely to leverage the greatest value from the program.
In order to be resilient in todays atmosphere of complexity and
change, libraries need leaders with a unique combination of
intellectual and interpersonal assets. The Ph.D. in Managerial
Leadership in the Information Professions contributes to the
successful future of leadership in library and information settings
by creating a flexible, innovative doctoral program that nurtures and
strengthens management and leadership abilities, actively involves
leading practitioners in shaping the educational experience, and
generates rigorous research to improve the knowledge base and the
practice of managerial leadership.
The program is characterized by flexible learning options to encourage
participation by candidates in full-time managerial roles who do not
wish to leave their current positions to pursue a degree. In
addition to tenure-track and adjunct faculty, the program annually
engages one or more recognized and respected leaders from the
information professions as Professors of Practice. These leaders work
closely with students and faculty in research, teaching, and
mentoring.
In addition to structured assessments, program activities include
presentation to diverse stakeholder groups and a variety of research
and analysis projects that will generate a comprehensive portfolio
for every student, featuring publishable business cases, issue
briefs, and research and analytical papers. Students will complete
their program with a written dissertation and oral defense before the
Committee on Doctoral Studies.
The program is led by Dr. Peter Hernon and Dr. Candy Schwartz, senior
faculty at GSLIS and nationally recognized for their contributions to
the field of library and information science. They are assisted by a
prestigious and diverse Board of Advisors consisting of current and
past leaders of major professional organizations such as the American
Library Association, the Association of College and Research
Libraries, the Association of Research Libraries, the Association for
Library and Information Science Education, the American Society for
Information Science and Technology, the Special Libraries
Association, the Council on Library and Information Resources, and
the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science.
The deadline for submitting applications is March 1, 2006. Candidates
will be informed of decisions by April 15, 2006. The program will
begin with a nine-day intensive instruction period held at Simmons
College from May 26 June 3, 2006.
