Vacancy Announcement
New Position

Between the mountains of the Blue Ridge and the shores of the Outer 
Banks lies North Carolina's Research Triangle of Raleigh, Durham, and

corporate, and public research, the area combines moderate year-round 
temperatures, rolling hills, championship college athletics, and a rich

The North Carolina State University Libraries has been recognized as the 
first recipient of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ 
Excellence in Academic Libraries Award for its teamwork, innovation, and 
continuous interaction with students and faculty to further the 
educational mission of NC State University. The NCSU Libraries is ranked 
32nd by the Association of Research Libraries among North America’s top 
113 academic research libraries and 20th among U. S. public university 
libraries.

The NCSU Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position 
of Head of Technical Services for Special Collections to join an 
innovative program of special collections and archives in support of 
teaching and research at the university. The Special Collections 
Research Center is an expanding program, with four new positions 
bringing the staff to 14 FTE. A major renovation is in progress to add a 
well-appointed reading room and a spacious, state-of-the-art exhibit 
gallery.

Responsibilities
Manages all technical services activities for the Special Collections 
Research Center, including processing of manuscript, archival, and rare 
book collections. Establishes processing priorities and serves as the 
Center’s expert in EAD and related metadata standards. Provides subject 
analysis for finding aids, establishes authority files, and 
prepares/edits MARC records. Catalogs rare books and special collections 
in a variety of formats and participates in the Research Center’s public 
services activities. Supervises processing support staff and leads the 
Center in developing improved workflows and procedures. Participates in 
library planning and serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and 
teams. NCSU librarians are expected to be active professionally and to 
contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Head of the 
Special Collections Research Center.

Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in library or 
information science. Minimum three years relevant experience. 
Demonstrated knowledge of current cataloging and metadata issues. Proven 
effectiveness processing archival and manuscript materials and working 
with EAD. Able to create a variety of finding aids, from brief to 
detailed, and prepare MARC records. Great attention to detail is 
required. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively, 
both independently and in teams. Ability to communicate clearly, 
knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in writing. Demonstrated 
record of ongoing professional development and contribution. Preferred: 
Academic library experience. Public service experience. Rare book 
cataloging desirable.

and veterinary medicine. With a staff of approximately 280 FTE, the 
Libraries has over 3.1 million volumes, acquires more than 51,000 print 
and electronic serials, and has a total annual budget of close to $25 
million, with nearly $9.25 million allocated to collections. The NCSU 
Libraries is the lead server site for NC LIVE (North Carolina Libraries 
for Virtual Education), a multi-type library initiative, making digital 
resources accessible to the citizens of North Carolina.

The NCSU Libraries is a founding member of SOLINET and a member of the 
Association of Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation, the 
Coalition for Networked Information, the Scholarly Publishing and 
Academic Resources Coalition, the Council for Library and Information 
Resources, and the Center for Research Libraries. Duke University, the 
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central 
University and North Carolina State University form the Triangle 
Research Libraries Network (TRLN), with combined resources of more than 
13 million volumes, and collections budgets totaling more than $29 million.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers highly competitive salaries in recognition of 
applicable education and experience, not less than $46,000 for this 
position. Relocation allowance provided. Appointment requires successful 
completion of background check. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty 
status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 
days sick leave; State of NC comprehensive major medical insurance, and 
state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options. Additional and optional 
dental, life, disability, deferred compensation, and legal plans are
