THE PROGRAM:
Everyone's heard of it: "508". A lot of people use the term but what
does it mean? What do you have to do? How do you go about it? Why
should you? From the "alt" attribute to animated images, information
professionals strive to make web sites usable for all visitors. Learn
more about such critical issues as assistive technology and what the
law really requires of your web site.
Amy Berger, Section 508 Coordinator for the US Geological Survey, will
educate us about the importance and the challenges of web site
accessibility. She instructs all US Geological Survey webmasters on the
necessities and requirements of Section 508 Compliance, as well as how
to fix the code itself. In 2002 she was interviewed by Government
Computer news, and is considered an expert on the topic. As she
explains,"Section 508 doesn't mean don't include graphics, it means
label them."
The interview can be read at:
http://www.gcn.com/21_28/accessibility/19989-1.html.
Plan to spend an evening with the Potomac Valley Chapter of ASIST as we
learn more about this important topic.
