Join us at tech connections 5 : secure and defend the WILD side of
technology on June 7 and 8, 2004 at the Fawcett Conference Center where you
will begin day one with State Librarian Michael Lucas sharing his
"Rehearsals for Retirement (with apologies to Phil Ochs)". "It was twenty
years ago today, that Dr. Byerly taught him how to search. Not very poetic
and not very accurate--it's actually more like twenty-six years ago--but you
get the picture: The retiring state librarian has been around for a long
time. Humor him as he walks down memory lane and recounts the changes he has
seen during his career--and ponders where we go from here."
Then on to the keynote presentation by Mark Minasi. Mark is a best-selling
author, popular technology columnist, commentator, keynote speaker, and
all-around alpha geek. What separates him from many of the other alpha
geeks, however, is that he knows how to explain things to normal humans and
often make them laugh while doing it. That's reflected in his recent
Reader's Choice award for "Favorite Technical Author" at CertCities. More
testimony to his popularity with tech world came at a recent SearchWin2000
webcast on tuning computers. At that webcast, Mark drew three times as many
attendees as any previous webcast, crashing Yahoo!'s servers.
Mark is probably best known for his books in the Mastering series (Mastering
Windows Server 2003, Mastering Windows NT Server, Mastering Windows 2000
Server, Mastering XP Professional, etc) and his perennial hardware PC repair
and fix-it book The Complete PC Upgrade and Maintenance Guide, now in its
13th edition. His monthly columns in Windows and .NET Magazine are among
the best-read in the periodical. Mark has also authored 19 other technology
books, spoken on technical topics in 20 countries, and written and performed
in a dozen technical education videos.
Mark's humorous, provocative and yet informative style makes him a favorite
of audiences around the world. Mark's firm, MR&D, is based in Pungo, a town
in Virginia's Tidewater area which is distinguished by having one and only
one traffic light. Visit Mark's Web site at http://www.minasi.com. Mark will
also present a session on Windows Server 2003 the afternoon of conference
day one.

Sites" (new session as of 4/2/04) with Frank Cervone, Assistant University
Librarian for Information Technology, Northwestern University who will be
flying in to join us following his presentation at the Special Library
Association Annual Conference. "The rate of change is changing, so we need
to continually scan the environment in order to understand what our patrons
expect from us. One expectation that has changed significantly in the last
few years is that web sites should be very easy to use and information must
be found readily. Recent research has uncovered some very interesting things
about how people use web sites and what they have come to expect both in
design and services. Join us for an interesting (and sometimes humorous)
exploration of how federated searching, individualized content, and new
trends in usability are providing a road map for the development of 'Next
Generation Library Websites'. "
