Return on investment (ROI) is a measure of how well an organization or even
parts of an organization manage resources. To use ROI, a library needs to
be able to show revenue or income for the activities it performs, as well as
know the value for assets on hand, like collections, equipment, furniture,
etc. The primary reason to use this approach is that ROI is universally
recognized as a traditional indicator of profitability by upper management
in almost any type of organization. Combinations of quantitative and
qualitative measures enable information professionals to establish value
within an organization.
Wear your walking shoes and join fellow SLA members for a day of
professional insight and renewal. The morning portion of the Betty Burrows
program includes a tour of both the June F. Mohler Fashion Library and Kent
State University Museum.

at San Jose State University in California. He has been teaching over 20
years in the areas of management, special libraries, and business
information resources. Mr. Fisher has published numerous books and journal
articles in publications such as Library Trends, Library Administration &
Management and Journal of Library Administration.
He is currently Past-President of SLA and has been a member since 1982. He
has a Ph.D. in Library & Information Management, University of Southern
California and was president of the Southern California Chapter of SLA. He
also maintains memberships in ALA, ALISE and ASIS&T.
History of the Mohler Fashion Library and Museum:
In 1983, two prominent New York retail fashion partners, designer Shannon
Rodgers and apparel manufacturer Jerry Silverman, donated a multimillion
dollar gift to Kent State University for the creation of a Fashion Design
and Merchandising School and for the establishment of a museum to house
their extensive decorative arts and fashion design collection. Among the
gifts were thousands of fashion journals and monographs, many of which
formed a core collection for the museum's non-circulating research library.
When Rockwell Hall was renovated in late 1988 to accommodate the School of
Fashion Design and Merchandising, space was created for a resource room, or
library, to serve students. It was not until 1995, that enough funds were
raised to make the Fashion Library a reality. Donations were contributed by
several donors, including corporations and individuals. In September of
1997, the June F. Mohler Fashion Library, named in memory of the Fashion
School's former dean, opened its doors for the first time. It is the
primary repository at Kent State University for printed materials on the
history of mid-Twentieth Century fashion, the apparel industry, fashion
retailing, fashion accessories, and fashion design. The collection includes
approximately 3,500 books, about 50 current periodical titles, and over 300
videos. In addition to these resources, one may peruse color microfiche from
several historically significant costume collections, including the Victoria
and Albert Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Fashion Institute of
Technology. Fashion forecasting publications, complete with fabric swatches
and color palettes are available, as well as recorded interviews with
notables in the Fashion World. An ample reference collection includes books
and original photographs and drawings.
The Betty Burrows Seminar:
The Betty Burrows Memorial Seminar is offered by the Cleveland Chapter SLA
in memory of Elizabeth Burrows, a Cleveland chapter member from 1947 until
her death in 1971. A generous gift from her husband, William, and other
memorial funds from friends and colleagues, has been used to establish the
Betty Burrows Memorial Fund. This fund helps to further one of Betty's
long-term interests, the education of special librarians.
Betty Burrows received her M.L.S. from the University of Michigan. She
began her career on the staff of the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland as a
cataloger. Subsequently, she joined the Alcan Aluminum Corporation where
she organized a corporate library. A member of the Special Libraries
Association for twenty-five years, Betty Burrows was an active member and
officer of the Cleveland Chapter. She served the SLA Business and Finance
Division as Secretary and Treasurer, and the Association as Chair of the
Scholarship and Student Loan Committee. As an appropriate memorial to
Betty, the Cleveland SLA chapter intends to continue this annual program.
