The University of Tennessee
The University of Tennessee invites applications and nominations for the
position of Dean of the College of Communication and Information. The Dean
reports to the Chancellor and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Salary
is nationally competitive and commensurate with experience and
qualifications. The University of Tennessee comprising thirteen colleges
is the states land grant and flagship research institution with
approximately 27,000 students (19,000 undergraduate and 8,000 graduate and
professional). The University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as
research-extensive.
The mission of the College of Communication and Information is to promote
the study of communication and information and their related processes and
technologies. To this end the College consists of four schools the
School of Advertising and Public Relations, the School of Communication
Studies, the School of Information Sciences, and the School of Journalism
and Electronic Media. The College offers bachelors degrees with
concentrations in advertising, electronic media, journalism, communication
studies, and public relations; the Master of Science degree in
communication studies and information sciences, and the Ph.D. in a variety
of concentrations. It contains 46 tenure/tenure-track faculty, 1,400
undergraduate, and 337 graduate students with an annual budget of over
$4million. A Board of Visitors comprising 48 distinguished individuals
supports the College and represents the disciplines and professions. The
College is committed to diversity and fosters among students and the
larger community a sense of the legal and ethical responsibilities of
access to information and the exercise of expression in a democratic
society. It serves the general education goals of increasing awareness of
the importance of communication and information in the contemporary world
and improving personal skills in communication, critical thinking,
information analysis, and evaluation. The College prepares graduate and
undergraduate students for careers in the communication and information
professions. It advances knowledge in the fields of communication and
information sciences through research and creative activities.
Responsibilities:
Foster curricular, teaching, and research excellence for all areas of
the College
Skillfully plan, direct and coordinate the Colleges operational,
personnel, and budgetary policies and procedures (including effective
management of a four million dollar budget)
Actively develop and support faculty
Enhance the Colleges position as an international center of excellence
Effectively nurture all constituencies of the College
Provide leadership in recruiting high quality employable students
Advance external funding through fundraising and grants programs
Provide leadership in all aspects of diversity
Develop and nurture strong relationships with relevant academic, public,
and business communities
Contribute actively and positively as a member of the Council of Deans
and as a senior administrator of the University
Qualifications:
Required
Earned Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree in a relevant field or
fields of study
Distinguished record of visionary and innovative leadership
Distinguished record of scholarly or creative achievement, teaching, and
professional accomplishments appropriate for appointment as a tenured full
professor in the College
Demonstrated experience in and/or thorough understanding and
appreciation of the research university environment
Demonstrated appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of the
communication and information sciences and the specific disciplines/sub
disciplines represented by the College
Demonstrated experience as a senior-level administrator including
skillful management of personnel and budget of an academic unit, or its
equivalent
Demonstrated experience in strategic planning development and
implementation
Demonstrated commitment to diversity in all areas of academic life, and
knowledge of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action
Strong ability to nurture and sustain collaborative working
relationships with faculty, students, staff, deans, administrators, and
all internal and external constituencies
Desired:
Demonstrated experience in planning and executing successful fundraising
programs
Experience with outreach and distance education programs
Outstanding record of excellence as a tenured faculty member at a
research university
Knoxville is a thriving community of 687,000 located near the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park in East Tennessee. It is surrounded by numerous
parks, lakes, and recreation venues. The community includes over 950
physicians and six hospitals, including a teaching hospital and a
childrens hospital. Knoxville supports a rich cultural life with an opera
company, symphony, ballet, theater, various concerts, and several
excellent museums.
