The College of Information Studies at University of Maryland announces the
second offering in our Electronic Continuing Education Program in Information
Law and Policy -- Responding to Judicial Process: A Guide to the Unexpected.
This course will run online from 16-27 June 2003 and provides not only a
thorough background in the legal issues but also concrete management steps
that should be undertaken (e.g., draft protocols and policies for your
consideration). In addition, ample opportunity is provided for interaction
with the faculty through asynchronous as well as live chat discussions.

Enrollment is open now (closes 2 June); for full information and a link to our
secure server for registration and payment see:
http://www.clis.umd.edu/ce/spring03/judproc.html. Once again the course is
available at a reduced rate of $95 (regularly $295) to members of select
listservs.

Topics to be considered: the forms and execution of judicial process
including how computer searches are conducted; exigent circumstance - scope &
expectations; the forms and execution of judicial process that issue in
foreign intelligence investigations including required secrecy; the issue of
jurisdiction (i.e., the reach) of courts at both the federal and state level;
the associated subject of civil process – the rights and obligations of your
institution vis-à-vis private litigants; the issue of voluntary disclosure;
and the necessary management policies and protocols for responding to judicial
process – what do we collect? Have we preserved it? Must we preserve it?
Who should be notified? Who should do what?
