Information Technology Services Department Head

UNC Health Sciences Library is a technology leader in managing knowledge
to advance health.  Join our team as Information Technology Services
Department Head where creativity is rewarded and exploration is
inspired.  Our Library envisions information at the fingertips of those
who will use it to discover, to teach and learn, and to make decisions.
The vision calls for innovation, excellence, accountability and
leadership in creating state-of-the-art health information systems and
services for the 21st century. A major building renovation project to be
completed in 2004 provides a technology rich collaborative environment
to fulfill this vision including teaching labs, multimedia design labs,
and public computing labs, video conferencing facilities, and an
Advanced Technology Center.

ITS Department Head communicates HSL’s vision, services, and needs in a
progressive campus IT environment that includes a digital library,
distance education, and a planned new integrated library system.  HSL’s
ITS Department also develops and supports two statewide digital library
products, nchealthinfo.org and library.ncahec.net.  Collaborates with IT
partners in schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and
Public Health; a 600-bed teaching hospital; and NC AHEC.   Actively
serves on the Library senior management team.  Leads in planning,
developing, implementing, and managing library computing and network
systems that support library users and staff on and off campus.
Effective advocate for applying technology to create, deliver, and
improve library services. Skilled in managing and enabling IT staff.
Establishes and reviews departmental policies and procedures; develops
an annual library-wide technology budget; oversees user support
programs; addresses security issues; and develops relationships with
vendors.

HSL technology environment includes a "tier 1" location, data
connectivity and pass through for approximately a dozen other buildings
in UNC Health Affairs ensuring timely network upgrades.  UNC connection
to commodity Internet is approximately 1.4 gigabits per second and has a
2.5 gigabit per second connection to Internet2.  UNC is a participant in
regional data projects including
http://www.ncni.net/index.shtml and http://www.ncren.net/.

HSL staff manages 8 Windows NT/2000 servers and approximately 100
workstations.  HSL is moving rapidly toward Windows 2000 active
directory.  Twin Windows 2000 web servers host 4 production web sites.
These include
http://www.hsl.unc.edu, http://www.uncle.unc.edu,
http://library.ncahec.net, and http://nchealthinfo.org.  A database
server with 300 gigabytes of storage running SQL 2000 provides content
for dynamically generated web pages built with Cold Fusion for Windows.
HSL has access to UNIX resources for development and for provision of
services but does not currently provide any UNIX system administration.
The HSL/UNC wired data network infrastructure fabric is layer 2 switched
ethernet.  HSL has extensive 802.11b wireless connectivity provided by
UNC Information Technology Services.  HSL ITS staff includes 4 employees
in support and 6 in development.

Required:    Graduate degree from an ALA accredited program or relevant
graduate degree with experience in a library or information service
environment.  Proven customer service focus and ability to work in a
team environment.  Strong technical skills including in-depth knowledge
of client/server hardware, software and networks, digital library
content delivery technology (e.g. vended and locally-created electronic
journals, databases, and datasets), and emerging technology issues,
standards, and philosophy (e.g. mobile computing, Internet2, open
source). Increasingly responsible management experience in systems or
computer networking positions, including successful leadership in
planning and setting priorities; budgeting; and working effectively with
senior management and external groups.  Demonstrated project management
success and supervisory skills.  Excellent oral, written, and
interpersonal communication skills.  Record of professional growth and
accomplishment

Desired:  Five or more years experience in library systems or equivalent
in computing and networking operations in an academic environment.
Three or more years supervisory experience.  Demonstrated
organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills. Experience with
maintaining Windows95/98/NT/2000 client workstations, servers, and
alternative network and other operating systems.  Technical experience
in delivering content through the Internet.  Knowledge of integrated
library systems and advances in applying information technology.
Experience teaching, consulting, or presenting to groups.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary commensurate with experience, $55,000 minimum with 5 years
experience.  State benefits include annual and sick leave; state or
TIAA/CREF retirement plan.
