Public libraries, as well as all public facilities, serve a large variety of
different peoples with different needs. Of these peoples, those with
disabilities have very particular needs. At this workshop, participants
will learn how to best serve the needs of the disabled population from a
member of that population. Presenter Laura Gold is the Director of the ADA /
Accessibility Services in Cleveland. Aside from her professional
accreditation, Ms. Gold will be able to give true insight into serving those
with disabilities because of her own hearing impairment. Come and learn from
Ms. Gold how to make your library or public facility conducive to the needs
of the disabled population.

Participants attending this workshop will be able to:
~Identify the origin and history of attitudes about people with disabilities
~Become more familiar with acceptable language/terminology relating to
people with disabilities
~Recognize appropriate ways for interacting and communicating with people
with various disabilities
~Examine attitudinal barriers and misconceptions associated with serving and
working with people with disabilities
~Learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA)
