Assistant Professor in Information and Computer Sciences
Assistant Professor, Position number 83381, Library and Information
Science Program, Department of Information and Computer Sciences, College
of Natural Sciences, full time (9-month), general funds, tenure-track
position, to begin August 1, 2003. Duties: Conduct graduate courses in
Library and Information Science, mentor and advise students, develop
program policy and curriculum, participate in writing grant proposals, and
teach both on campus and through distance education. In addition to the
MLISc, the LIS Program and ICS Department participate in a doctoral
program in Communication and Information Sciences. Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in library and information science or closely related discipline
from an accredited college or university. Demonstrated commitment to
effective teaching, research and service, and a student-centered and
community-oriented attitude. Candidates should have an extensive
understanding of the use of information technologies in the design of
information services. Candidates are sought who can teach in two or more
of the following areas: bibliographic description, organization and
control; reference (including virtual) and information retrieval; the
library and its changing environment; management of libraries and
information centers; information resources management; research methods.
Knowledge of current information and communications technologies, and the
ability to develop and deliver Web-based distance education. Ability to
advise and mentor students in a culturally diverse program and to interact
with community agencies, alumni and peers in the profession, the
department, and the university. Desirable Qualifications: Specialization
in one or more of the following areas: archives, digital archives and
preservation; informatics; Web site architecture; knowledge management;
content management; metadata, taxonomies and ontologies for digital
libraries, portals and Web sites; youth services. Experience with distance
education, particularly Web-delivery of instruction. A cross-disciplinary
orientation is desirable. Pay Range: Salary commensurate with candidates
qualifications and experience. Summer teaching may be available with
