        CALL FOR PARTICIPATION:  CoLIS4

Registration is now open for CoLIS4, the Fourth International Conference
on Conceptions of Library and Information Science: Emerging Frameworks and
Methods, to be held at The Information School, University of Washington,
Seattle, WA, USA from July 21 to 25, 2002.   The general aim of CoLIS is
to provide a broad forum for critically exploring and analyzing library
and information science as a discipline and as a field of research from
historical, theoretical, and empirical perspectives.

Program highlights include
 o  A day of tutorials, including
      * Michael Buckland , History of Information Science
      * Stephen Robertson, Evaluation of Information Retrieval Systems
      * Ian Cornelius, The Concept of Information
      * Rob Kling, Social Informatics
 o A keynote presentation
 o Three days of technical sessions on Information Interaction, Infometric
   Approaches, and Information Retrieval
 o Panels, including
      * The Information Schools: Impact of Name Change
      * The Dark Side of Information Technology
 o Two one-day workshops:
      * Philosophical, Historical, Rhetorical, and other Conceptual
        Approaches to Library and Information Studies
      * Theory Development in Information User Studies

The social program includes a welcome reception, a reception and poster
session, and a banquet at the Microsoft campus.  A pre-conference tour to
Mount Rainier, and a post-conference tour to Snoqualmie Falls and the
Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery are also available.

One of the attractions of the conference is its venue:  Christened "The
Emerald City", Seattle is known as one of the most liveable cities in the
world as well as one of the most beautiful.  Seattle is surrounded by
lakes, rivers, Puget Sound, and mountains.  July shows Seattle at its
finest, with an average high temperature of 75F and only 0.89 inches of

Attendees are reminded that JCDL 2002, the Joint Conference on Digital
Libraries, will take place in Portland, Oregon, the week prior to CoLIS4,
