Coordinator of Information Services

University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a new tenure-track
library faculty position to take the lead in developing, implementing, and
evaluating user services. Reporting to the Vice President for Information
Technology, the Libraries are faced with uncommon challenges and
opportunities to collaborate with instructional design, campus computing and
media production personnel in the development of programs, services and
partnerships with faculty. The University is in the early stages of planning
for a new 310,000 square foot building, projected to open in 2006, that will
combine library and information technology services. The convergence of
information technology provides an extraordinary opportunity to support
students and faculty through innovative services.  Position reports to
Director of Access Services.

Responsibilities:
· manage the existing library’s reference/information service point and
develop the information center for the new building;
· supervise professional and classified staff; and coordinate the services
of reference/information center personnel who report to a variety of library
departments;
· develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with other UNR
departments, promoting  library services and resources to the UNR community;
· manage the general reference collection (paper and online);
· develop and implement services specifically focused on the College of
Business.  This includes collection development for business related
resources and outreach to business faculty;
· perform outreach activities to the local business community;
· analyze electronic and print resources;
· work with the documents librarian to ensure the smooth integration of the
documents reference and general reference service points;
· promote excellence in information service with a strong end-user
orientation;
· engage in research and service to meet requirements for promotion and
tenure.

Required Qualifications:
· MLS from an ALA accredited program;
· experience with current and emerging technologies in digital and web-based
library services;
· experience providing reference and instruction with both print and
electronic formats;
· demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and motivate staff;
· demonstrated ability to manage human and technology resources in the
continually changing landscape of information services and a dynamic user
community;
· demonstrated knowledge of best practices and current trends in providing
information services that emphasize a commitment to supporting the end-user;
· demonstrated flexibility and ability to work in collegial environment;
· excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
· potential to meet university requirements for tenure and promotion.

Desirable Qualifications:
· experience planning new library facilities;
· work experience in an academic library environment;
· managerial and supervisory experience with professional, classified and

· experience using government documents (federal, state or international);
· demonstrated knowledge of data analysis and effective use of statistics;
· experience marketing and promoting library services;
· demonstrated knowledge of virtual reference service;
· experience or training in Web based development tools.

Compensation: Salary minimum $43,962. TIAA/CREF and other retirement
options; 24 vacation days per year; generous sick leave. No state income tax

Electronic Resources Access Librarian

The University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a tenure-track
library faculty position to take the lead in exploring innovative methods of
access to electronic resources. The position will coordinate procedures and
workflow for staff involved in these activities and projects. Reporting to
the Director of Metadata Services, the incumbent will collaborate within a
collegial environment that supports forward-looking experimentation and
solutions.

Responsibilities:
· articulate and implement strategies for providing access to materials in
packages or separately, purchased non-serial electronic resources, and
digitized library collections;
· actively search for creative methods of providing access to electronic
resources within and supplementary to the OPAC;
· continuously evaluate evolving standards and technologies, seeking to
optimize quality and timeliness of data;
· collaborate with staff in other library departments, such as Reference or
Systems, to develop applications that improve access to library resources;
· cooperate with catalogers and the Applications Development Librarian in
maintaining a workflow for loading files into the OPAC, using tools such as
MARCMaker, and for generating Web pages from the OPAC;
· recommend, implement and improve the maintenance program for Web links in
cataloging records;
· work with Director of Resource Acquisition and Serials Department to
coordinate and document relevant workflow between them and the Catalog
Department;
· supervise one or more staff;
· collaborate with staff engaged in electronic resources cataloging or other
metadata projects, such as the current MetaLib/SFX implementation project;
· work closely with Director of Metadata Services and other catalogers to
coordinate priorities, policies, staffing, and workflow within the Catalog
Department;
·  engage in research and service to meet requirements for promotion and
tenure.

Qualifications:
· ALA accredited MLS (by date of hire);
· dedication to serving library users by well-managed presentation of
resources;
· strong interest in creating access to serials in an evolving digital
information environment;
· general understanding of cataloging/metadata problems, relevant standards,
and emerging technologies;
· healthy skepticism regarding cataloging traditions and assumptions, and a
desire to shape evolving standards;
· excellent analytical abilities;
· independence to manage work demands and staff supervision in an energetic
library setting;

Applications Development Librarian

The University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a new tenure-track
library faculty position reporting to the Director of Library Systems. The
Applications Development Librarian will take a lead role in recommending,
configuring, designing, and developing applications that will support the
library’s initiatives to provide user-friendly, integrated access to:
· an extensive and rich collection of licensed electronic resources;
· unique resources in digital format;
· materials lacking item-level metadata or finding aids;
· tools and resources, regardless of format, tailored to meet the teaching,
learning, and research needs of specialized university constituencies

Responsibilities:
· work closely with library faculty and staff to design the structure and
interfaces for local databases;
· provide training and ongoing technical support to the staff developing
databases;
· participate in configuration, customization, and creative uses of SFX and
MetaLib tools for linking and cross-domain searching of electronic
resources;
· provide staff training and ongoing technical support for large-scale
digitization projects;
· develop appropriate digital document processes including acquisition,
input, access, file conversion, preservation, maintenance, storage,
security, etc.;
· evaluate, recommend, and implement efficient and effective technical
solutions to challenges of providing granular access to information
resources;
· work with Systems staff on authentication solutions;
· engage in research and service to meet requirements for university
promotion and tenure.

Required Qualifications:
· an MLS from an ALA accredited program;
· an optimal blend of interest, aptitude, skills and experience in the use
of information technology to provide access to resources and metadata;
· experience with relational databases such as Microsoft SQL Server and
Access;
· working knowledge of some of the following development tools: XML, CGI,
ASP, CSS, VBScript, Perl, Javascript, and HTML/XHTML;
· knowledge of current and emerging technologies in digital and web-based
library services;
· knowledge of metadata standards, graphics formats, data manipulation
techniques;
· excellent interpersonal skills;
· potential to meet university requirements for promotion and tenure.

Desirable Qualifications:
· experience designing user-centered interfaces and interactive web
applications;
· working knowledge of high-level languages: C++, Java, Visual Basic;
· experience with Web/Oracle or Web/SQL Server development;
· experience with Unix applications;
· experience with GIS map server platforms.
