The College of Information Studies
Continuing Education Program
University of Maryland
presents the following Financial Management Workshops

Budgeting for Decision Making

This seminar takes you through some of the common concepts of financial management and provides a hands-on opportunity to practice basic techniques such as cost/benefit analysis and calculating payback/savings.

Whether you are a current manager or are looking forward to assuming new responsibilities, this seminar will provide information that will help you increase your understading of the financial tools available to you to manage your operations. In today' environment, librarians need to have more than specialized knowledge about information resources, they also need to be able to apply appropriate business and management skills to support decision-making.

In this seminar you will...
* Discuss basic financial concepts and terminology
* Develop a better awareness of why the finance function is important to you
* Examine the purpose and use of a budget - what are management's goals?
* Review the steps required to develop a program/project (operating) budget
* Look at sources of data for identifying the cost of services
* Learn techniques for cost/benefits analysis and calculating payback/savings
