Content Management Service within the Corporate Information and
Technology Center
INFORMATION ARCHITECT (REQ. #8916BR)
Location/Department:
Bedford, MA OR McLean, VA; Dept. R305 - Information Technology
Key Functions:
- Provide information architecture expertise in the integration of
information across systems.
- Apply information architecture to the design of intranet applications
and intranet web sites including the intranet homepage.
- Design enterprise-level and within-site navigation that meets user
and business requirements.
- Collaborate with product managers and development teams to negotiate
design feasibility. Partner with usability team on research and
assessment activities, and to devise improvements based on usability
findings. Provide project teams with recommendations for practical
trade-offs that get usable, well-designed products up and running.
- Document design intent clearly for both business and technical
audiences, using site maps, wireframes, and interaction flow diagrams
with appropriate functional and behavioral annotations.
- Conduct user interviews; collect, analyze, and summarize
metrics/usage data; leverage results of data analysis to inform design
decisions.
- Contribute to the development of enterprise standards, models, and
guidelines including metadata architecture and methods for
classification (e.g., taxonomies, ontologies, tagging, etc.). Consider
ways to leverage current technologies (e.g., web services, RSS, etc.)
to integrate intranet content and gain efficiency.
Required Education/Experience:
BS or equivalent and 1 year related experience or MS or equivalent
Desired Education/Experience:
- Minimum 5 years current, demonstrable experience in designing
information architectures for complex systems. Some experience
designing for corporate intranets is preferred.
- Minimum BS/BA degree required (MA/MS preferred), with
multidisciplinary backgrounds such as Psychology, Computer Science,
Information Science, Library Science, Information Systems, Human
Factors, User Interface Design, or equivalent experience in related
disciplines.
Required Skills:
- Experience applying information architecture and user-centered design
techniques (such as interviews, card sorts, and usability tests), and
using the data collected to produce prototypes, use cases, task flows,
site maps, etc. for large, complex web sites
- Experience architecting enterprise navigation
- Working knowledge of Visio, Photoshop, and Microsoft Office
applications required. Familiarity with HTML and CSS capabilities and
constraints required. Direct experience with HTML, DHTML, XML, Java,
Dreamweaver, and Macromedia Director a plus.
Desired Skills:
- Experience designing user interfaces, creating navigation structures,
and integrating web content in an intranet environment including
experience with portals, directory services, collaborative
applications, and search systems (including relevancy ranking,
categorization, and tagging of content for greater precision in
retrieval)
- Experience with enterprise information architecture, considering
strategic information requirements and integrated content delivery
- Understanding of basics of systems/software engineering practices,
usability principles, requirements development, and testing principles
- Project management skills; demonstrated experience in managing
projects that require defining goals, tasking others, and meeting
scheduled milestones
- Understanding of information management standards and best practices,
particularly in areas of web site structures, content
management systems, metadata, and lifecycle management
- Business process analysis skills, including ability to analyze work
processes and recommend changes to leverage technologies and gain
efficiency
- Excellent visual, verbal, and written communication and presentation
skills
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines,
prioritize, and work on multiple projects simultaneously with great
efficiency and attention to detail
- Strong analytical and process-oriented problem-solving skills
- Ability to function successfully in a collaborative, cross-functional
team environment and influence team members without
formal authority
Travel Statement:
*This position will require overnight travel up to 10 % of the time.
