I have to deal with this issue a lot. :-)

First, make sure you're taking care of any compliance issues that may arise.

Then, explore the issue of risk. How is it actually computed, in your
context? Is it something analytically derived? Is any one individual
document a point of risk input or is it the case of aggregated risk over a
defined terrain?

If you're lucky and your docs are structured or can be parsed for structured
info then you can feed that into your risk analysis which would then weigh
the relevance of the doc(s) based on their history/date.

You should definitely look into creating a layer of abstraction at the point
of retrieval to further filter docs based on history/date after a search.
Now, in many financial services orgs the currency is the (financial)
advice/recommendation they provide, which are almost always based on a
window of validity over time. The industry and most of its customers
understand this. Sort of:

Say a brokerage house calls stock XXX a strong buy. That's usually for a
window of 12 months. Then inevitably life happens and, perhaps, the call is
changed to a hold with in two months. In some cases you can expose prior
calls and associated analysis on a given stock, sometimes not.

Financial info and pronouncements based on that are almost always a vector
time. However, people usually don't have the time or the inclination to wade
through historical archives. So proper and easily digestible summarization
and infoviz presentation of historical perspectives and trends is the way to
go.

Beyond that, it really depends on the context. :-)
