Certification is a complicated issue. Many will say the answer is
"No," which strikes me as the prudent response. Yet it may may not
always be so, so we might instead say "No, not yet."
There are some formal options though. Not certification, per se, but
formal education and training.
Baltimore and Kent State have master's programs in Information
Architecture. Baltimore couples IA with interaction design, Kent
State with Knowledge Management. Both programs are still young and
feeling their way along, but they are growing and seem to be healthy
(I hope so; I start as an assistant prof at Kent State this fall).
These programs don't mean certification is immiment, necessary, or
inevitable. But I think it's a sign that the field is maturing and
stablizing, and hopefully it will increase, if only slightly, the
pool of knowledge and skilled IAs.
