Have your sysadmin install gallery2 from http://gallery.menalto.com/ -
it uses ImageMagick or netpbm for photo manipulation. Playing with
that will give you a good peek at the underlying architecture, and it
has multiple interfaces for accomplishing the same task so you can see
in practice whether you like the java or html method.
