I had the biggest impact on our serps by doing things that don't
interfere with good experience or usability.  Speaking the users
language, not using images for text, and the like should support both
goals.

That being said, I also had to sometimes create content that really
wasn't necessary for the user in any context I could concieve, but
that supported our desired search engine rankings.  I always tell our
folks that content has two purposes, and only one of them involves
users of the site.
