The Creative and the Corporate
A Lansdown Centre Symposium on the State of Interactive Media
Advance notice of symposium
Friday 8th September 2006
Lansdown Centre for Electronic Arts
Middlesex University
North London, United Kingdom
The Lansdown Centre at Middlesex University, London, will run a one-day
research symposium addressing the question of how creative, arts-based
education prepares graduates for their subsequent lives as designers of
interactive media. Through this event, we aim to publicly reflect on our own
work; symposium participants, now working mainly but not exclusively in
industry, will review the education they received in the light of their
experience.
For fourteen years, the Lansdown Centre at Middlesex University has been
educating the interaction designers of the future. Graduates of its Masters'
programme in Interactive Media are senior designers, creative directors,
project leaders, heads of interactive media or, in many cases, owners of
businesses. Some are educators, others internationally known artists, such
as Alex Mayhew who first came to notice with his startling Ceremony of
Innocence in 1997. Graduates have won many accolades nationally and
internationally.
The symposium and associated exhibition explore the range and variety of
interactive media from commercial projects to experimental work. By having
the symposium coincide with the graduation exhibition of our current
Masters' students, we aim to bring together the goal-oriented world of work
with the open-ended innovative culture of an Arts-based education. How well
does such a programme prepare its students for their future lives?
For this symposium, we have chosen to invite speakers who are all graduates
of Middlesex. The event is therefore a celebration of achievements, as well
as an interrogation of the relationship between education and work. It will
be of value to industry practitioners, educators, and anyone interested in
the future of media.
