This is key.

Subdomains should be used to present different content to different  
audiences.

Smooth integration is a key to success as well. Moving your audience  
from one subdomain to another should be as seamless as possible.

I'd probably use RSS to perform some internal content syndication  
these days where content had to be duplicated, in addition to session  
management.
