Aaargh!
I wish we can move beyond this simplistic confusion: a Director, Designer,
Conductor, etc., do NOT have to IMPLEMENT specific tasks to affect the
outcome. They are there to orchestra/conduct/shape/give direction to a
process -- they don't have to pull film and pluck the strings.
Susan Morse is an Oscar winning editor of many of Woody Allen's movie. Do
you think for a moment that she edited "Hannah and Her Sisters" on her own,
without his direction?
I don't know any director who hasn't spent countless hours in the editing
bay *with* his editor.
Editors, like other masters-of-one-trade, do NOT start with a clean slate.
They edit the footage *given* to them, often with explicit directions and
continuous input, review and approval from the Director. Collaboration does
NOT mean design by committee.
C'mon.
