[Sigia-l] Trails in the grass

In an interview, Larry Wall (of Perl fame) gives this analogy:

"When they first built the University of California at Irvine campus, they
just put the buildings in. They did not put any sidewalks, they just planted
grass. The next year, they came back and built the sidewalks where the
trails were in the grass."

I've heard this before, but I still love the ballsiness of the approach,
applicable in many ways to app design and pattern discovery.

Does anybody know for a fact if this is historically accurate?
