Having never observed anyone using the open source equivalents, I can't
speak to their design.
As for their marketing, I'm not sure putting another brand moniker on them
will help. If Compare'x' is going to work, it will need to create it's own
reputation and positive associations, just like any brand. Whether the
people who use those brands will know or care it's open source is still to
be seen.
I am curious why you think this is more parasitic than Red Hat or any of
the other open source vendors? I thought the entire idea of the open source
movement was to push value into the support and packaging space. (At least,
that's what I keep hearing Tim O'Reilly tell me.)
