It sounds like you're OK, but your company may not have a clue. :-)

It sounds like the people at the top of the organization haven't yet grasped
the fundamental significance of Design. Would they fund a significant
project without business/financial due diligence? Of course not; it's part
of the process. Would they sign a significant obligation without the lawyers
getting involved? Of course not; it's part of the process. Would they start
a significant data-intensive project without a DBA/Data Architect getting
involved? Of course not; it's part of the process.

Now, should they start an application without getting Designers involved?
Not if they haven't yet grokked Design. If the top people grok it, they'll
provide the resources to make it happen; if they haven't, you'll die a
thousand deaths with every projects and every ad hoc step. Generally
speaking, when the top people regard Design as a semi-demi-necessary
nuisance, miserly applied by a resource-starved team, there isn't much hope.

So be bold, take it to the top and make your case. After all, if Design is
fundamental why should you be torn? You should have the requisite resources
to do what needs to be done. Does the accountant work without his abacus?
:-)
