Yes, like every other form of communication. The difference with formal
vocabularies is that they are attempts to make biases explicit -
"foreground" would be a positive spin rather than "betray".

I agree we weren't having a productive theoretical discussion! (that was
MY point)
BTW, when you say "I don't subscribe to the theory" were you referring
to the "Information Theory" I'd just referred to or the (other) theory
that you were originally questioning Dan about? (not sure but it sounded
a bit Saussurean to me)
