You can select multiple by dragging the mouse-click. This is useful when the
list items are arranged in some intrinsic order (eg. salary ranges, a
hierarchy of industries, etc), but not always so useful (eg. an alphabetical
list of vegetables on a grocery store site)

Compare with checkboxes: if you want to select a range you must click,
click, click, click, click, click. Selecting entire groups in checkboxes are
possible with a bit of programming, but not always ideal (say you want the
entire X group, except for the X.y sub-item).
