1. Take the total number of websites in the world.

2. Subtract the number of websites that started with detailed
research and a prototype.

3. Subtract the crappy sites that don’t work very well (for whatever
reason).

4. And you still end up with millions of sites.

So, John’s solution #2 would appear to work. In fact, it just might
be that the research/prototype-based sites actually constitute the
vast minority of usable sites. This is probably NOT the view of the
world we’d like to see, but maybe this illustrate that most companies
do not share our penchant for lengthy and/or expensive processes.

Did McMasters-Carr do special research? It seems more likely that
they took their experience from the printed catalog, scrapped the
cover, and turned the table of contents into the main menu. And they
made the individual pages interactive rather than flat pdf-like
screens.

Prototypes may be good in some cases, but they can easily get in the
way, too. Sometimes, it pays to heed the Nike slogan – “Just do it.”
