I agree with Donna. If it's relevant to the list, I say it should be
allowed (and welcomed). Just because someone is selling something
doesn't mean it isn''t useful.
Those who feel that a certain amount of contributions are required as
"admission" should feel free to NOT BUY that product or service.
Some of the people selling services, writing books and blogs,
coordinating events, offering seminars or training have a lot to
contribute to the field, and do so in many ways. If you think they
should offer their best ideas or all their ideas here, then you're
likely to get none of those ideas.
On the other hand, if someone starts using the list for hard-core
marketing on a regular basis, then I'm all for drawing the line. I
haven't seen anything out of line recently.
For many folks, the current "culture" of SIGIA may not be welcoming.
I've had many people talk to me off-list - in person and via email -
about how, in their opinion, this list has "gone down the tubes" or
how the tone here is very adversarial. If some of the folks in the IA
profession don't feel SIGIA is a place that welcomes them, because
they feel "attacked" when they post here, then I'd say SIGIA should do
some soul searching. Just because I like to debate folks, and put up
with sarcasm (okay, I dish it out too) doesn't mean everyone does.
Frankly, I've cycled through many periods of active participation and
"lurking" here. Sometimes I lurk because I'm too busy at work,
sometimes because the discussion is "old hat" and is simply repeating
something I've discussed or read a number of times, sometimes it's
because the flames and tone get pretty tired.
I'm on many different lists, and often get "promotional" announcements
in multiples...even so, I welcome their contribution.
