Liz,
To be fair, if you performed a Windows search immediately or soon after
turning on the indexing service, there wouldn't be a performance boost.
The indexing service runs in the background to create search indexes of
all the files on your hard drive. This takes a while to build (and uses
a lot of processing power). If you ran a search right away, you'd be
doing it without any index having been built yet.
That said, I don't use this service and always turn it off. In the
past, I have had annoying experiences with the indexing service churning
away while I was trying to do other things, and it slowed the computer
considerably. (Love your description..."constipated". Ha!) Microsoft
may have improved it since then, but I'm biased against it at this
point. And I rarely search for files on my computer so I don't mind the
occasional wait.
Matthew
